Early detection saves lives — but only for the people who can actually get screened, understand their options, and get timely follow-up care. Too many of the communities we serve are still being left out of that equation.
The Power of Early Detection
When cancer is detected early, treatment is often more effective, less invasive, and associated with better outcomes. Advances in screening and early detection have helped reduce mortality for several cancers, yet too many people — particularly in Black communities and other communities of color — are still diagnosed after the disease has progressed.
Expanding access to both established screening tools and emerging innovations can help more people benefit from earlier diagnosis, more treatment options, and improved chances of survival. That's the equity gap HEAL Collaborative was built to close.
Barriers to Early Detection Persist
Despite significant progress in cancer care, many individuals face obstacles that can delay diagnosis and treatment, including:
- Limited access to screening and preventive care
- Challenges navigating the healthcare system
- Missed referrals and follow-up care
- Lack of awareness about cancer screening options
- Distrust and other barriers that discourage engagement with healthcare
These barriers don't fall evenly. They disproportionately affect communities of color and other underserved populations, contributing to later-stage diagnoses and higher mortality rates. Addressing them — through education, advocacy, and trusted community partnerships — is at the core of HEAL Collaborative's work, and it's essential to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from advances in cancer detection.
HEAL Collaborative's Focus: Cancers Where Early Detection Matters Most
HEAL Collaborative is committed to increasing awareness of cancers where timely detection can have a significant impact on outcomes, especially in the communities of color and faith-based networks we work alongside every day.
Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men, and it disproportionately affects Black men, who face higher rates of diagnosis and death. When detected early, it is often highly treatable. Decisions about screening with a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test should be based on informed conversations between patients and healthcare providers, taking into account individual risk factors and preferences — which is why HEAL Collaborative prioritizes education that helps people ask the right questions and advocate for themselves.
A New Era of Innovation: Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED)
Cancer screening is entering a new chapter. Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests are being developed to identify signals associated with multiple cancers from a single blood draw — potentially before symptoms appear.
Unlike traditional screening approaches that focus on individual cancers, MCED technology has the potential to detect many cancers, including some cancers for which no routine screening options currently exist. For communities that already face barriers to routine screening, that potential matters even more.
Why MCED Matters:
MCED technology may help:
- Detect multiple cancers from a single test
- Complement — not replace — recommended cancer screenings
- Identify cancers that currently have limited or no screening options
- Expand access to screening through routine healthcare visits
- Increase the likelihood of finding cancers before they become symptomatic
Early results from the largest randomized controlled trial of MCED found that the Galleri test identified cancer at roughly 4 times the rate of standard screening alone, and identified more cancers at Stages I and II for some cancer types. Full trial results are still being analyzed, but this early signal points to real promise.
MCED testing represents one of the most promising innovations in cancer detection today, with the potential to transform how we find cancer across populations — but only if access to it is built equitably from the start.

Innovation can only improve outcomes if people actually benefit from it. As new screening technologies become available, it is essential to ensure that awareness, education, and access keep pace — particularly among populations that have historically experienced lower screening rates and poorer cancer outcomes.
This is where HEAL Collaborative's model comes in: pairing community education and healthcare navigation support with trusted, faith-based, and community partnerships so that new tools don't just reach the people with the easiest access to care, but reach the people who need them most. By making early detection tools more accessible, convenient, and patient-centered, we can help ensure that advances in cancer care close gaps instead of widening them.

- Expand access to proven early detection tools where barriers are greatest
- Support the equitable adoption of emerging technologies, including MCED testing
- Empower patients through education, healthcare navigation support, and shared decision-making
- Ensure that advances in cancer detection reach every community, not just the ones already well-served
