Policy in Action

Effective January 1, 2025, CMS plans to change coverage for oral-only phosphate lowering therapies (PLTs) drugs for patients with kidney failure. This change could significantly increase the financial burden on patients and limit their access to essential medications.

Introduced by Reps. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter, Ann McLane Kuster, Carol Miller, and Terri Sewell, the bipartisan Kidney PATIENT Act (H.R. 5074) aims to postpone this change until 2033 or until new intravenous therapies become available. By supporting this act, we can ensure that thousands of kidney failure patients continue receiving the necessary treatments without added financial stress.

In June 2024, Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (TN) introduced The Kidney PATIENT Act to the Senate, S4510. We are excited about the forward movement on this bill.

The Milwaukee Community Journal published Pastor Walter L. Fields, JR.'s OpEd in support of The Kidney PATIENT Act.

Here are a few of the policymakers that stand together with HEAL Collaborative.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of policymakers throughout the U.S. that partner with us on our mission. We work together to keep them informed of needs of their community health equity, they also serve on our roundtables and help to inform on the other side.
